The result: our clients can make verifiable claims—and appeal to consumers’ personal care needs as well as their sense of environmental responsibility.
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the effects of demographic change, water scarcity and the ethical issues involved in sourcing raw materials for food and cosmetic products. Recent discussions on palm oil have raised questions on future availability and responsible sourcing.
Manufacturers have also become aware of more environmentally friendly technologies in relation to their own sustainability programs and efforts. Supplier ratings based on their environmental programs as well as their products are now a fact of business life, with lifecycle analyses highlighting the points of highest impact.
It stands to reason that Evonik Personal Care needs to consider the complete lifecycle of a product and its ingredients where the product form and application properties of the raw materials used might be of major significance in the future.
Comparing all sustainability characteristics of a raw material might not, nor should it, end in one binary number telling us what is more or less sustainable. But some of these characteristics can be clustered so as to provide formulators with an initial indication of where to apply most developmental effort.

There will always be the need for more detailed and individual product and sourcing analysis, which in turn requires a dialog-based approach encompassing the complete supply chain. The economic aspects of sustainability likewise necessitate this kind of joined-up approach, particularly in view of the geographic shift in the markets and the major changes in cosmetic product formulations which are inevitably going to take place.
