Pamper yourself with Beauty Serum

Innovative Solutions by Evonik for the Serum Trend

Petra Biehl, Geraldine Strutz, and John Reed

Serum is diverse and it’s everywhere! Beginning in professional cosmetology, it has found its way into the cosmetic market. This innovative type of cosmetic product shows noticeable results faster than other products, due to the fact that it contains higher concentrations of biologically active substances, such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, mineral complexes and plant extracts.

Serum products fit perfectly into the cosmetic trend of anti-aging. Evonik as a leading producer of anti-aging solutions also focuses on serum. But what are the exact applications of serum? It can be used on the face, the neck, the décolleté or around the eyes, and indeed serum can be used irrespective of age.

With references to this, Evonik provides a significant range of active ingredients that could be incorporated into serum, one of which is the peptide, TEGO® Pep 4-17. It is able to boost the most important components of the extra-cellular matrix (ECM), which is an important target for anti-aging products. The ECM boosting peptide verifies its positive effect in multiple in vivo anti-wrinkle studies. Moreover, the filling and reducing of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as improved skin elasticity, are important claims for a large number of serums. Additionally, many serums claim to have visible results, even after just one use – and Evonik has solutions for these types of claims as well.

Evonik’s product HyaCare® Filler CL, the topical wrinkle smoother, is based on crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid. It contributes instantly and noticeably to the reduction of facial wrinkles and fine lines, as well as increases the elasticity of the skin. Its high water-binding capacity and strong short-term moisturization properties effectively support the hydration of the skin. This makes the product an ideal candidate for a serum. The proven in vivo effects of HyaCare® Filler CL, together with the product form, support the demand for an instant effect from serums.

HyaCare® 50, a low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid, can also be used in serums. By combining both active ingredients, one can enhance the rejuvenation of the skin by effectively strengthening dermal-epidermal tight junctions (filling wrinkles from the inside). All these features make them an ideal choice for an application like serums.

Additionally, Evonik also offers emulsifiers and emollients which allow the serum to have the right functionality. Below you can find three different formulations of serum products: a gel formulation, a water/oil emulsion and an oil/water emulsion. For example, TEGO® Care PSC 3, a new oil/water emulsifier, is a good choice in terms of combining its natural origin, excellent performance and cost efficiency. Another choice is TEGOSOFT® OER, a new sustainable and enzymatically-produced emollient with caring properties and a smooth, non-oily skin feel.

In fact, with the right concentration and combination of ingredients, there are no barriers to creating a serum which reacts, not only immediately and effectively, but in the best way.
