Evonik presents: Color Cosmetics with a Foundation of Performance

Despite being hard-hit during the pandemic, Color Cosmetic sales have been regaining ground during 2022 but increasingly with the added consumer requirement of increased naturality. Moving from traditional to natural cosmetics, to natural cosmetics with high performance levels, and ultimately to certified natural cosmetics is no small journey. While marketers may want it all from a product perspective, formulators understand that the balance between naturality, performance, and certification standards is often like a juggling-act. Through multiple iterations of color cosmetic concepts and formulation development, Evonik formulators have travelled through these development milestones and gained helpful formulation insights. Naturality was calculated using ISO 16128 standards, performance was assessed based on color cosmetic measures such as mattifying, spreadability, volumizing, powder flowability, and transfer-resistance in addition to certification compliance based on certifier guidelines review. Outcomes include a variety of formulations illustrating different levels of naturality and performance.

Anna Howe
Anna Howe is an Applied Technology Manager, North America, for the Personal Care business of Evonik Corporation at the new Business & Innovation Center in Richmond, Virginia. Anna responsibility focuses on new product developments, formulations, performance evaluations, test method development for claims, and technical services.
Anna earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, VA. Anna joined the Personal Care Group of Evonik Corp. in 1997. Prior to joining Evonik, Anna held positions of increasing responsibility at Inolex Chemical Company, Rhône-Poulenc (Rhodia) and Alcolac Chemical Corporation. Further, Anna is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and holds several application patents as well as authored several scientific papers in the personal care arena.
